Integrated Force
In 1954, Wing Commander Dick Cresswell developed the Fighter Combat Instructor (FCI) course to rectify deficiencies in air combat skills seen between the end of WW2 and the Korean War. Since its inception, the training has evolved to focus on the effective integration of RAAF platforms and capabilities.In 2013, the F/A-18F Super Hornet was first included on the course, operated by No.1 Squadron. In addition, No. 6 Squadron ran the inaugural Growler Tactics Instructor (GTI) course in 2019 after introducing the EA-18G Growler, electronic attack aircraft.36 FCI course, conducted by No. 2 Operational Conversion Unit in 2022, marks the first time a 5th Generation aircraft has participated in the course. The F-35A Lightning II, F/A-18F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler now make up Australia’s integrated air combat force.
